2,080 is the number everything rests on
Forty hours a week across fifty-two weeks is 2,080 hours a year. Multiply an hourly rate by that and you have the annual gross. 25 an hour becomes 52,000, and 30 becomes 62,400.
There is a shortcut worth knowing for rough conversions: double the hourly rate and add three zeros. 25 an hour is roughly 50,000. It is about 4% under the real figure, which is close enough to sanity-check a job advert.
Going the other way, divide the salary by 2,080. A 75,000 salary is a little over 36 an hour at full-time hours.
Paid weeks are where the comparison breaks
The 52-week assumption only holds if your time off is paid. A salaried employee taking three weeks of paid leave still gets 52 weeks of pay, so the arithmetic works.
A contractor taking three unpaid weeks does not. They are paid for 49, and at 40 hours that is 1,960 hours rather than 2,080. On a rate of 50 an hour, that gap is 6,000 a year, which is why the weeks field on this page is editable rather than fixed.
This is also why an hourly rate and a salary that look equal usually are not. The salary tends to carry paid holidays, sick leave and benefits that the rate has to cover out of itself.
Gross, and only gross
Every number on this page is before tax. Income tax, FICA at 7.65%, state and sometimes city tax all come off afterwards, and what is left depends on your filing status, your dependents and where you live.
This page does not estimate any of that, on purpose. Take-home needs facts about you that a calculator cannot guess, and a confident wrong number about someone's own pay is worse than no number.
For the other direction there is the salary to hourly calculator, and to check a week of real hours before converting anything, the work hours calculator totals it.
Frequently asked questions
Common queries and answers about the hourly to salary calculator.
- How do I convert an hourly rate to a salary?
- Multiply the hourly rate by hours worked per week, then by paid weeks per year. At 40 hours and 52 weeks, that is the rate times 2,080.
- How much is 25 an hour a year?
- 52,000 a year gross, at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. That is about 4,333 a month before tax.
- How much is 20 an hour a year?
- 41,600 a year gross at 40 hours a week, which works out at about 3,467 a month before any deductions.
- How much is 30 an hour a year?
- 62,400 a year gross at full-time hours, or about 5,200 a month before tax.
- How much is 15 an hour a year?
- 31,200 a year gross at 40 hours a week. Part-time hours scale it down in proportion.
- How many work hours are in a year?
- 2,080 at 40 hours a week across 52 weeks. That is the number almost all salary conversions are built on.
- Is this my take-home pay?
- No. Every figure here is gross, before income tax, FICA, state tax and any deductions. Take-home is meaningfully lower and depends on your filing status and state.
- Should I use 52 weeks if I get unpaid leave?
- No. If some weeks are unpaid, lower the weeks figure. A contractor taking four unpaid weeks should use 48, which drops the yearly total noticeably.
- Does a salary include overtime?
- This conversion assumes a flat rate for every hour. If you regularly work paid overtime at 1.5x, your real annual total will be higher.
- Why does my quoted salary not match this?
- Usually paid holidays and benefits. A salary often covers weeks you do not work, which an hourly rate does not, so the two only match once you set the paid weeks correctly.
