How overtime pay is worked out

The federal rule comes from the Fair Labor Standards Act, the FLSA. Hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at one and a half times the regular rate. There is no federal rule about long days, only long weeks, so four 11-hour days is 44 hours and 4 of them are overtime.

Time and a half means the rate plus half the rate. At 20 USD an hour that is 30 USD. Work 46 hours and you get 40 at 20 plus 6 at 30, so 800 plus 180, which is 980 USD.

One thing people miss: the regular rate is not always your hourly wage. Non-discretionary bonuses and shift differentials get folded in first, which nudges the overtime rate up. A flat hourly wage with a production bonus is the common case where the two figures differ.

State rules that beat the 40-hour week

Some states pay overtime by the day as well as the week, and where state and federal law disagree the one better for the worker applies. This is why a weekly total on its own can be wrong.

California is the big one. Overtime starts after 8 hours in a workday, double time after 12 hours in a day, and overtime still applies after 40 hours in a week. On a seventh straight day in one workweek the first 8 hours are time and a half and anything past 8 is double time. So you can work 38 hours in a week and still be owed overtime for one long Tuesday.

Alaska and Nevada also have daily rules at 8 hours, and Colorado at 12. Check your own state before you trust any weekly calculator, including this one.

What no tax on overtime actually means

It does not mean overtime is untaxed. The 2025 federal law created a temporary income tax deduction for qualified overtime, and a deduction lowers the income you are taxed on when you file. It is not a bigger paycheck on payday and it is not an exemption.

Three limits decide whether it helps you. It applies only to the premium part of the pay, meaning the extra half in time and a half, not the whole overtime amount. It is capped, at 12,500 USD for a single filer and 25,000 USD filing jointly. It phases out at higher incomes, starting around 150,000 USD single and 300,000 USD joint, and it is set to run only through the 2028 tax year.

Social Security and Medicare still come out of overtime as usual, so your payslip will not suddenly grow. Because the amount depends on your filing status and total household income, this page works out the overtime pay and stops there rather than guessing at your tax return. Figures here are as of July 2026, so check current IRS guidance before you rely on them.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

Common queries and answers about the overtime calculator.

How is overtime pay calculated?
Hours above the regular threshold (40 per week in the US by default) are paid at the overtime multiplier, usually 1.5x your hourly rate.
What is double time?
Some rules pay 2x after a higher threshold. Set the double-time threshold and multiplier and the calculator splits hours into regular, overtime and double time.
Is this legal advice?
No. Overtime rules vary by country and state. Use this as an estimate and check the rules that apply to you.
Is overtime really not taxed now?
No, overtime is still taxed. A temporary federal deduction lowers the income you are taxed on when you file, it applies only to the extra half in time and a half, it is capped, and Social Security and Medicare still come out on payday. Details are in the section above.
What does the FLSA say about overtime?
The Fair Labor Standards Act requires 1.5x the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. It sets no daily rule, so a long single day is not federal overtime unless the week also passes 40 hours.
How does California overtime work?
California pays overtime after 8 hours in a day, double time after 12 hours in a day, and overtime after 40 hours in a week. On a seventh straight workday the first 8 hours are 1.5x and anything beyond is 2x.
How do I figure time and a half?
Multiply the hourly rate by 1.5. At 20 USD an hour, time and a half is 30 USD. Bonuses that are not discretionary get folded into the regular rate first, which raises that figure.
