Two multiplications and one hard part
Gross pay is regular hours times the rate, plus overtime hours times one and a half rates. At 22 an hour, forty regular hours is 880 and six overtime hours is 198, so gross is 1,078.
The multiplication is never what goes wrong. The split is. Deciding which hours count as overtime is the whole job, and getting it wrong is invisible on the payslip.
Federal rules say overtime is hours beyond 40 in a workweek, at 1.5 times. Several states add daily thresholds on top, so a long day can earn overtime even in a short week.
Overtime is per week, not per payslip
This is the mistake that quietly underpays people. Overtime is defined per workweek, but many businesses pay semi-monthly, and a semi-monthly period cuts straight through the middle of a week.
If a week is split across two payslips and each half is paid at the base rate, the hours over 40 in that week never get their uplift. Nobody notices, because each payslip looks internally consistent.
The fix is to work out the split week by week first, then total the pay period. Doing it the other way round hides the overtime entirely.
This stops at gross
Gross is what was earned. Take-home is what survives federal withholding, FICA, state tax and deductions, and working that out needs your filing status, dependents, pre-tax contributions and state.
None of that is on this page and none of it is guessed at. ADP, Gusto and SmartAsset own the take-home question and they have the tax tables to answer it properly.
What is genuinely ours is the input: gross pay is only as right as the hours behind it. Timesheets record hours per day and per week as the work happens, so the overtime split comes from a record rather than from memory the night before payday.
For the overtime rules by state, see the overtime calculator, and for a whole period at once the payroll hours calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Common queries and answers about the gross pay calculator.
- How do I calculate gross pay?
- Multiply regular hours by the hourly rate, then add overtime hours at 1.5 times the rate. The two together are gross pay for the period.
- What is gross pay?
- It is what you earned before anything comes off. Income tax, FICA, state tax and deductions are all taken from it to get take-home pay.
- What is the difference between gross and net pay?
- Gross is what you earned, net is what reaches your bank. The gap is tax and deductions, and it varies with your filing status and state.
- Does this calculate my take-home pay?
- No, and deliberately so. Take-home needs your filing status, dependents, pre-tax deductions and state, and guessing at those gives a confidently wrong number.
- How is overtime worked out?
- Federal rules pay 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states add daily overtime rules on top.
- How much is 10 hours of overtime at 20 an hour?
- 300. Ten hours at 30, which is 20 times 1.5. That sits on top of the regular pay for the week.
- Why must overtime be counted per week, not per pay period?
- Federal overtime is defined per workweek. On a semi-monthly cycle one week can sit across two payslips, and paying both halves at the base rate underpays the overtime.
- Is a bonus part of gross pay?
- Yes, bonuses and commission count as gross earnings, though they can be taxed differently. This calculator covers hourly work only.
- Do salaried workers get overtime?
- Some do. Being paid a salary does not automatically make someone exempt, and the exemption depends on duties and a minimum salary threshold.
- How do I check my gross pay is right?
- Compare the hours on your payslip against your own record of hours worked. The rate is rarely the problem, the hours usually are.
