A clock, not a calculator
This one runs live. You press start when you begin and stop when you finish, and it counts while you work. That is different from typing yesterday's hours into a grid, and it matters because a time written down at the end of the day is a memory, while a punch is a record.
Use it for a single shift you are working right now. If you are reconstructing last week from notes, a grid is the better tool and there is one linked below.
Turning punches into payroll hours
Payroll almost always wants decimal hours, and clock times are in minutes, so every punch pair needs converting. The rule is minutes divided by 60. Twenty minutes is 0.33 of an hour, not 0.20.
The chart covers five-minute steps, which is enough for most punches. Round the shift total once at the end rather than converting and rounding each punch, or the errors stack in the same direction.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 5 minutes | 0.08 |
| 10 minutes | 0.17 |
| 15 minutes | 0.25 |
| 20 minutes | 0.33 |
| 25 minutes | 0.42 |
| 30 minutes | 0.50 |
| 35 minutes | 0.58 |
| 40 minutes | 0.67 |
| 45 minutes | 0.75 |
| 50 minutes | 0.83 |
| 55 minutes | 0.92 |
| 60 minutes | 1.00 |
What a browser clock cannot do
It is one clock, for one person, in one browser tab. Close the tab and the session is gone, nobody else can see it, and there is no record anyone could check later. For timing your own work that is fine, and it is why there is no sign-up.
It is not a workplace time clock. There is no way to tell who pressed the button, no approval step, and no history, so it cannot settle a disagreement about a shift six weeks later.
For a team you want punches tied to a person and a period, which is what the time clock app does: people clock in from their own phone, each period builds a timecard, and a manager signs it off. For converting a whole week by hand instead, use the time card calculator, and for the conversion on its own the minutes to hours converter.
Frequently asked questions
Common queries and answers about the online time clock.
- Is my data saved?
- No. Entries stay in your browser for the session only and reset when you reload the page. For a clock that syncs across devices and your team, use TimeTracker.
- Can my whole team use one clock?
- This single-user clock is for one person on one device. Teams need shared accounts, roles and a kiosk, which the TimeTracker product provides.
- How is total time calculated?
- It sums every clock in to clock out span, plus the live elapsed time of any entry still running.
Tired of doing this by hand?
TimeTracker captures every hour automatically and turns it into timesheets, invoices, and live profitability.
