Turning a salary into an hourly rate
Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. For standard US full-time work that is 2,080 hours, which is 40 hours a week across 52 weeks. A 62,400 USD salary comes out at 30 USD an hour.
The 2,080 figure includes your paid holidays and vacation, because you are paid for those weeks. If you want the rate for hours actually at work, subtract your leave first: the same salary over 1,880 hours is 33.19 USD an hour instead.
For part-time or compressed schedules, replace the 2,080. A 30-hour week is 1,560 hours a year, so divide by that.
Common salaries at 2,080 hours
Rounded to the nearest cent, at a standard 40-hour week. The monthly column is the annual figure divided by 12, which is what payroll uses rather than counting each month's actual weekdays.

Why this is not what you should charge
If you are converting a salary to work out a freelance rate, this number is too low, and it is the most common pricing mistake there is. A salary comes with an employer paying for your taxes, benefits, software, downtime and the hours nobody bills.
Two adjustments matter. Add the cost your employer was carrying, which is usually 20 to 30% on top of salary. Then divide by the hours you can actually bill, not all 2,080, because admin, sales and gaps between jobs are unpaid.
The billable rate calculator does both of those properly, and the freelance rate calculator starts from the income you want instead of a salary. To see where your billable hours actually go, TimeTracker stores a rate per client, project or person.
Frequently asked questions
Common queries and answers about the salary to hourly calculator.
- How do I convert salary to hourly?
- Divide the annual salary by total hours worked per year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours), divide the salary by 2,080.
- Should I use 52 weeks or fewer?
- Use 52 for a salaried role with paid leave. Use fewer weeks if you want to reflect unpaid time off, which raises the effective hourly figure.
- Is this gross or net pay?
- It is gross pay, before tax and deductions. Take-home pay will be lower depending on your tax situation.
