Durations and seconds counts
Machines record durations in seconds. A log file, a video timeline, an API response: all of them hand back a plain number like 5025. People read time as 01:23:45.
Converting is two steps each way. To seconds, multiply hours by 3,600, minutes by 60, and add. Back again, divide by 3,600 for the hours, then divide the remainder by 60 for the minutes, and keep what is left as seconds.
The hours field here keeps counting past 24 rather than rolling over, because a 30-hour total is a 30-hour total. Rolling to 06:00:00 would be a clock time, which is a different thing entirely.
Why four decimal places
A second is 0.000278 of an hour. Round decimal hours to the usual two places and you lose up to eighteen seconds per entry, which is invisible once and material across a month of short entries.
This matters most where the work is short and the rate is high: support calls, code reviews, consultations. Twenty entries a day rounded down is several minutes of billable time gone, every day.
So the decimal readout here carries four places. Round it later if your system needs two, but round deliberately rather than losing it before you have seen it.
hh:mm:ss is a format worth using
Zero-padded hh:mm:ss sorts correctly as plain text, which is why logs and video tools use it. 01:23:45 sorts before 10:00:00 in a way that 1:23:45 does not.
It is also unambiguous. 1:23 could be an hour and 23 minutes or a minute and 23 seconds, and the padded three-part form removes the guess.
If you need to add two of these together rather than convert one, the time calculator handles h/m/s arithmetic directly, and the time unit converter goes further up the scale to days and years.
Frequently asked questions
Common queries and answers about the hours minutes seconds calculator.
- How do I convert hours minutes seconds to seconds?
- Multiply the hours by 3,600, the minutes by 60, and add the seconds. So 1:23:45 is 3,600 plus 1,380 plus 45, which is 5,025 seconds.
- How do I convert seconds to hours minutes seconds?
- Divide by 3,600 for the hours, take the remainder and divide by 60 for the minutes, and whatever is left is the seconds.
- How many seconds is 1 hour 30 minutes?
- 5,400 seconds. An hour is 3,600 and half an hour is 1,800.
- How many seconds are in an hour?
- 3,600. Sixty minutes with sixty seconds in each.
- What is 5025 seconds in hours and minutes?
- 1 hour 23 minutes and 45 seconds, written 01:23:45 as a timecode.
- Why does this show four decimal places?
- Because a second is only 0.0003 of an hour. Rounding to two places throws away up to eighteen seconds, which matters when short pieces of work are billed.
- What is hh:mm:ss?
- A zero-padded timecode: two digits each for hours, minutes and seconds. It sorts correctly as text, which is why logs and video tools use it.
- How do I add two times with seconds?
- Convert both to seconds, add them, then convert the total back. The time calculator on this site will add two durations directly for you.
- Should I bill in seconds?
- Rarely. Most work is billed in minutes or six-minute increments, but capturing the seconds first means the rounding is a decision rather than an accident.
- Does this handle times longer than a day?
- Yes. The hours field keeps counting past 24 rather than rolling over, so a 30-hour total stays as 30 hours.
