Multiply by 60, and mind the decimals
Hours to minutes is one step: multiply by 60. Three hours is 180 minutes. Eight hours is 480. There is no trick to it as long as the number is whole.
Decimals are where it slips. 1.5 hours is 90 minutes, which most people get. 1.2 hours is 72 minutes, which most people do not, because 1.2 looks like it should end in 20. The decimal is a fraction of 60, never of 100.
If you have hours and minutes already, convert the hours and add the minutes on. 2 hours 15 becomes 120 plus 15, so 135 minutes.
When minutes are the better unit
Short work is easier to record in minutes. A support call, a code review, a site visit: writing 25 minutes is faster and more honest than writing 0.42 hours, and it avoids a rounding decision at the point of entry.
The conversion then happens once, at the end, when the total goes to payroll or onto an invoice. One conversion of a large number is safer than fifty conversions of small ones, because each small rounding is a little loss and they all fall the same way.
That is the argument for logging in whatever unit the work naturally comes in, and converting at the boundary rather than in your head each time.
Let the total do itself
Any converter is a stopgap for a record that was not kept as the work happened. The minutes you are converting had to be remembered first, and remembered minutes are generous to whoever is remembering.
Recording as you go removes both problems at once. Timesheets total the period in whichever unit you need, against a client and a project.
