Time Unit Converter
Convert any unit of time into any other, from seconds up to years. This converts lengths of time, not time zones, so it will not tell you what time it is in another city.

Convert through seconds, not in a chain
The safe way to change units is to turn the amount into seconds first, then divide by the seconds in the unit you want. One multiplication, one division, and nothing accumulates.
Chaining is what goes wrong. Weeks to minutes done as weeks to days to hours to minutes rounds three times, and each rounding pushes the answer the same way.
The numbers worth knowing: 60 seconds a minute, 3,600 an hour, 86,400 a day, 604,800 a week. After that the units stop being exact.
Months and years are averages, and that matters
There is no such thing as a month in seconds. Months run 28 to 31 days, so any converter has to pick an average, and the honest one is 30.44 days rather than a round 30.
Years have the same problem in smaller form. A year is 365.2425 days once leap years are counted, not 365. Using the round number drifts about a day every four years, which is exactly the error leap years exist to correct.
So use months and years for rough scale and days for anything that has to be right. If a contract turns on the date, count the days.
This is not a timezone converter
Worth saying plainly, because the phrase time converter is used for both. This page converts lengths of time. It will not tell you what time it is in another city, and it does not know about daylight saving.
What it is for is the working question: how many hours is that project, how many minutes is that meeting series, how many days of work is 200 hours.
Once the units are settled, the question underneath is usually where the hours went. Reports answer that from a real record rather than an estimate.
For the single conversions people look up most, the minutes to hours converter and the hours to days converter carry the full charts.
Frequently asked questions
Common queries and answers about the time unit converter.
- How do I convert between units of time?
- Turn the amount into seconds first, then divide by the seconds in the unit you want. Doing it in one step through a common base avoids stacking rounding errors.
- How many seconds are in an hour?
- 3,600 seconds. That is 60 minutes with 60 seconds each.
- How many seconds are in a day?
- 86,400 seconds. It is 24 hours at 3,600 seconds each.
- How many hours are in a week?
- 168 hours, which is 7 days at 24 hours. A full-time working week is 40 of those.
- How many minutes are in a day?
- 1,440 minutes. This is also why the military time chart on this site has exactly 1,440 rows.
- How many days are in a month?
- It varies from 28 to 31. This converter uses the calendar average of 30.44 days, which is why month conversions are marked as averages.
- Why is a year 365.2425 days here?
- That is the Gregorian average once leap years are included. Using a flat 365 makes long conversions drift by roughly a day every four years.
- Does this convert time zones?
- No. This converts lengths of time between units. For what time it is somewhere else, you need a timezone tool instead.
- How many hours are in a work year?
- 2,080 at 40 hours a week across 52 weeks. That is the figure most salary and capacity planning uses.
- Why do my month conversions look slightly off?
- Because no month is 30.44 days long. The average is right across a year but wrong for any single month, so use days directly when the exact month matters.
