The one-step way to take a percentage off

Most people do it in two steps: work out the discount, then subtract it. There is a shorter way that is harder to get wrong. Multiply by 1 minus the discount as a decimal.

So 25% off is a straight multiply by 0.75. 30% off is a multiply by 0.7. One operation instead of two, and no chance of subtracting from the wrong number.

Going backwards, divide instead of multiplying. Something priced at 60 after 25% off started at 60 divided by 0.75, which is 80.

Stacked discounts are smaller than they sound

20% off and then a further 20% off is not 40% off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so 100 becomes 80 and then 64. That is 36% off.

The multipliers make it obvious: 0.8 times 0.8 is 0.64. Two discounts multiply, they never add. The last column of the chart above gives this for every percentage.

The same maths is why a discount followed by a price rise of the same percentage does not get you back where you started. Down 20% and up 20% leaves you at 96.

Discounting time is different to discounting stock

A shop that discounts still pays the same for the stock, but it can sell more units. A team that discounts its work still spends the same hours, and there are only so many hours in a week.

That makes a service discount come straight off the margin with nothing to offset it. On a 40% margin, a 10% discount needs roughly a third more volume just to stand still, and the volume has to come from somewhere.

How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the percentage, then take that off the original. Quicker still, multiply by 1 minus the discount, so 25% off is a straight multiply by 0.75.
What is 25% off 80?
60. A quarter of 80 is 20, so the saving is 20 and the final price is 60.
What is 30% off 100?
70. You save 30 and pay 70, which is the same as multiplying 100 by 0.7.
What is 20% off 50?
40. A fifth of 50 is 10, so you save 10 and pay 40.
What does 20% off then another 20% off come to?
36% off, not 40%. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so 100 becomes 80 and then 64.
How do I work out the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount. Something at 60 after 25% off started at 60 divided by 0.75, which is 80.
How do I work out what percent off something was?
Take the new price from the old one, divide by the old price, then multiply by 100.
Is 50% off the same as half price?
Yes, they are the same thing. Multiply by 0.5 either way.
Should I discount my services?
Be careful. Your cost is hours, and the hours do not shrink when the price does, so the whole discount comes out of the margin.
How much extra work does a discount need to pay for itself?
More than most people expect. On a 40% margin, a 10% discount means you need about a third more volume just to make the same profit.
