Total days and working days are different questions
Most people asking for the days between two dates want one of two numbers, and they are far apart. From 1 March to 1 June is 92 total days and about 65 working days. Quote the wrong one on a project plan and you are a month out.
Total days is what contracts and notice periods run on: a 90-day notice period counts weekends. Working days is what delivery dates run on, because nobody is building anything on a Saturday.
The calculator gives both, and the chart converts the fixed spans people ask about into weeks and months so you do not have to reach for a calendar.
Where the count goes wrong by one
The classic error is whether to count the first day, the last day, or both. From Monday to Friday is 4 days if you count the gap and 5 if you count the days themselves. Both are defensible, which is exactly why they cause arguments.
This calculator counts the gap, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. If your contract counts both endpoints, add one.
Leap years are the other trap. Any span crossing 29 February gains a day. A year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except centuries, unless they divide by 400, which is why 1900 was not and 2000 was.
Days elapsed is not days worked
A project that ran from March to June took 92 days on the calendar. What it cost you is the hours people put into it, and those two numbers have almost nothing to do with each other.
That gap is the whole argument for recording as you go. Reports show the hours actually logged against a project across any span, rather than the days the calendar says it occupied.
To turn a span of hours into days, the hours to days converter has the full chart, and the hours calculator handles a single day between two times.
Frequently asked questions
Common queries and answers about the date difference calculator.
- How do I count the days between two dates?
- Subtract the earlier date from the later one. The calculator above does it for you and also gives the count in working days, which is usually the number people actually need.
- How many months is 90 days?
- 90 days is just under 3 months, about 2.96. Months are not all the same length, so 90 days only lands exactly on 3 months if the span misses February.
- How many weeks is 90 days?
- 90 days is 12.86 weeks, so 12 full weeks and 6 days over.
- How many working days are in 90 days?
- About 64, counting Monday to Friday and ignoring public holidays. The exact figure depends on which day the span starts on.
- How many days is 6 months?
- About 182 days, though it ranges from 181 to 184 depending on which months are in the span and whether February has 29 days.
- Does the calculator count both the first and last day?
- It counts the gap between them, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. If you need both days included, add one to the total.
- What is the gap between dates?
- It is the number of days from one to the other. To work it out by hand you subtract one date from the other, which is easy to get wrong across month and year ends.
- How do I count only weekdays?
- Count the full weeks and multiply by 5, then add the weekdays in the leftover days. The working days figure above already does this.
- Why do leap years matter?
- A leap year adds 29 February, so any span crossing it gains a day. Years divide by 4 to be leap years, except centuries, unless they divide by 400.
- How many days are in a year?
- 365 in a normal year and 366 in a leap year. A working year is about 260 weekdays before public holidays and leave.
